WHAT IS DIABETIC NEUROPATHY
Over time, people with diabetes may develop damage to nerves throughout the body. This condition, called neuropathy, can cause numbness, pain, and weakness in the feet, hands, legs, and arms. It can also affect other body systems, including the digestive tract, heart, and reproductive organs (such as erectile dysfunction or vaginal dryness).
50% OF DIABETIC PATIENTS HAVE NEUROPATHY
Nerve issues can occur at any point in someone with diabetes. The longer the disease is present, the greater the risk becomes. It’s estimated that half of all individuals with diabetes experience some form of neuropathy, though not everyone will show symptoms. The highest occurrence is in people who have lived with diabetes for 25 years or longer.
WHO’S AT RISK
Diabetic neuropathy is more likely in people who have difficulty controlling their blood sugar, elevated blood fat or blood pressure levels, are overweight, or over the age of 40. The most prevalent form is peripheral neuropathy—also known as distal symmetric neuropathy—which commonly affects the arms and legs.
